Zenlynx- product showcase – Micro n78 – Header

We spoke with Justin Wang, the Product Owner, about the device, its role in supporting operators, and how it aligns with Zenlynx’s broader strategy.

How would you explain the purpose and function of the Outdoor Micro O-RU n78D 4T4R TDD 5W?

The Outdoor Micro O-RU n78D 4T4R TDD 5W is a compact, high-performance open radio unit for 5G outdoor deployments. This O-RAN compliant device operates on the n78D band (3400-3600 MHz) and manages wireless signal transmission between the baseband unit and antennas.

It features 4T4R configuration with 5W per transmit branch (20W total RF output), supports 200MHz bandwidth, and connects via eCPRI/Ethernet fronthaul. Designed for both outdoor and indoor use, it withstands extreme temperatures and weather while maintaining a compact 4.5L volume and 4.5kg weight.

Furthermore, it serves as a platform for radio for other frequency variant radios. This provides many advantages for operators.

What operational challenges does this solution help network operators address?

It addresses space limitations in dense urban areas where traditional macro base stations won't fit. Its compact design enables installation in restricted spaces.

It simplifies deployment with its lightweight design and easy mounting, reducing installation time and costs compared to larger units.

It improves energy efficiency through GaN-based amplifiers with over 50% power-added efficiency, reducing energy consumption, cooling needs, and total ownership costs.

It enhances network reliability through robust design and comprehensive monitoring, minimizing downtime and maintenance visits.

From a technical standpoint, what key innovations or design choices in this product make it stand out for compact outdoor deployments?

GaN technology in power amplifiers delivers superior efficiency (>50%) compared to traditional solutions with a smaller footprint, enabling higher power in a more compact form.

The thermal management system ensures reliable operation from -40°C to +55°C without active cooling in most conditions.

A modular, service-friendly design incorporates "right-to-repair" principles with field-replaceable components, minimizing downtime in remote locations.

The integrated power supply supports both AC (~220V) and DC (+36V), simplifying installation and reducing additional equipment needs.

A compact aluminum enclosure with IP-rated protection balances size with durability for various outdoor environments.

Advanced signal processing with 256QAM modulation and linearity management ensures optimal performance in challenging RF environments typical in urban deployments.

How does the product’s 4T4R configuration and 5W TDD capability specifically enhance its efficiency compared to other configurations in similar scenarios?

The 4T4R configuration with 5W TDD capability offers key efficiency benefits:

Spectral efficiency: 4T4R enables spatial multiplexing and diversity techniques that boost data throughput compared to 2T2R solutions, serving more users simultaneously with higher data rates and maximizing site value.

Balanced power: 5W per transmit branch optimizes coverage and power consumption. This configuration delivers excellent range while maintaining energy efficiency without excessive power consumption or cooling needs.

TDD flexibility: Time Division Duplex implementation provides better spectral efficiency than FDD in scenarios with varying uplink/downlink needs. The system dynamically allocates resources based on actual traffic patterns.

Deployment efficiency: The 4T4R 5W configuration meets coverage and capacity targets with fewer sites than lower-power alternatives, reducing total ownership costs including site acquisition and maintenance.

Energy savings: >50% power efficiency using GaN PAs reduces both energy consumption and cooling requirements compared to less efficient alternatives, crucial where power availability or cost is a constraint.

Can you share any insights into how this product has been tested under extreme outdoor conditions?

The Outdoor Micro O-RU n78D 4T4R TDD 5W has undergone extensive testing in extreme conditions to ensure reliable operation:

Temperature testing from -40°C to +55°C confirmed RF performance with minimal degradation, power consumption under 180W at 25°C/150W at 45°C, and reliable cold-start capabilities.

Environmental testing included 95% humidity exposure, IP65-equivalent water spray testing, and salt fog testing for coastal deployments, with the unit maintaining performance throughout.

Mechanical testing verified durability under vibration, shock, and high winds. The 4.5kg unit with robust mounting remains stable in severe conditions.

Reliability testing showed 175,000-hour MTBF and 10+ year longevity, while RF performance validation confirmed stable EVM and sensitivity in challenging interference environments.
